Dental Hygiene

Tips & Advice

Complete Dental Care

At Dentique Dentistry, we believe that a healthy smile is the result of both compassionate care and informed practices. Our mission is to empower you with the knowledge you need to maintain excellent oral health while providing the gentle, reassuring support you need and deserve. Here are some essential dental hygiene tips to help you maintain your smile every day.

Brush with care Twice a Day

Brushing your teeth twice a day is fundamental to good oral hygiene. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to effectively remove plaque and prevent cavities. Make sure to:

  • Brush for Two Minutes: Spend at least 30 seconds on each quadrant of your mouth.
  • Use Gentle,Circular Motions: Avoid aggressive scrubbing that can damage your gums and enamel.
  • Clean All Surfaces: Don’t forget to brush the inner surfaces, chewing surfaces, and especially around the gum line.

Clean in-between the teeth for Healthy Gums (Interdental cleaning)

Interdental cleaning with brushes or floss is essential for removing plaque and food particles from in-between the teeth, where your toothbrush can’t reach. It helps prevent gum disease and cavities in these tight spaces. Here’s how to floss effectively:

  • Use About 18 Inches of Floss: Wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving about 1-2 inches to work with.
  • Gentle and Thorough: Slide the floss gently between your teeth, curving it around each tooth and moving it up and down.
  • Don’t Forget the Back Teeth: Make sure to floss behind your back molars as well.

Interdental brushes are more effective than flossing for cleaning in between the teeth. There are different sizes of brush available and the Hygienist can advise you which size to use.

Maintain a Balanced Diet

What you eat has a significant impact on your oral health. A healthy balanced diet with vitamins and minerals supports healthy teeth and gums. Consider these tips:

  • Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks: Sugar feeds harmful bacteria in your mouth and converts sugar into acid that cause cavities.
  • Eat Crunchy Fruits and Vegetables: Foods like apples and carrots help clean your teeth naturally and stimulate your gums.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking water helps wash away food particles and keeps your saliva production optimal.

Regular Dental Check-Ups

Regular visits to your dentist are crucial for maintaining oral health. At Dentique Dentistry, we recommend:

  • Regular Exams(check-ups) with a Dentist and Professional Maintenance with our Hygienist. Hygiene maintenance includes removing calculus (tartar) that brushing and flossing alone can’t, and exams help catch potential issues early. We can also give you good advice to reduce risk factors.
  • Open Communication: Don’t hesitate to discuss any concerns or ask questions about your oral health. We’re here to guide and support you.

Protect Your Teeth

Taking proactive steps to protect your teeth can prevent damage and maintain their strength. Consider the following:

  • Use a Mouthguard: If you play sports, or grind your teeth, a mouthguard can protect your teeth from injury.
  • Avoid Using Teeth as Tools: Using your teeth to open packages or bottles can cause cracks and chips.
  • Limit Acidic Foods and Drinks: Acidic substances can erode enamel. Rinse your mouth with water after consuming them, or use a fluoride mouthwash.

Educate and empower yourself

Understanding the ‘why’ behind these practices is key to maintaining a lifelong commitment to dental hygiene. We encourage you to:

  • Stay Informed: Read up on oral health topics and ask your dentist for resources.
  • Attend Educational Workshops: Participate in any community health events or dental workshops we offer.

At Dentique Dentistry, our goal is to make you feel secure, protected, and cared for. By integrating these dental hygiene tips into your daily routine, you’re taking proactive steps toward a healthier, brighter smile. Remember, we’re always here to provide the knowledge and support you need; if you have any questions or need personalised guidance, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Be kind, stay informed, and keep smiling!
